The Tips
The Anchor Text in your links established on other web sites is of the utmost importance. It should contain your primary keywords.
You need to have a high density of keywords in your content. For example if you had 3 Keywords in a content of 100 words you would have 3% density. If you had those same 3 keywords in a content of 1000 words then the percentage would be down to .3%. This would be too low to get proper ranking from the search engines.
It does no good to focus on keywords no one searches on. Use Overture's (Click Here) tool to determine this. (See List Below for an Example)
Establishing links to pages with similar content will help a lot to achieve ranking. You can do this by exchanging links with other similar content web sites although having good content that will make people want to link to you without reciprocal linking gives you even better status.

Don't submit to search engines. That's right. What you need to do is find sites that are already indexed in the search engines and then get linked to them. The spider will crawl their site find your link and then crawl your site. This doesn't include Directories.
Put code like the following in the Header section of your page so that the spider will crawl your whole site.
Put this code in each page that you don't want the search engine spider to crawl.
